About Us
Jeff and I feel very fortunate to be in the alpaca farming business. Several years ago I mentioned looking into purchasing alpacas and Jeff looked at me like I was crazy. Due to a canceled golf outing I suggested we go to the PAOBA show just to see what alpacas were like up close. Well a long story made short the very next day we started to cut down trees, add on for a barn, stretch fence and within the month we had our first two females.
This business has been a learning experience and one we have enjoyed along the way. We did not know a thing about fiber structure, conformation, bite, bloodlines, etc. However, we were very fortunate to have bought from a quality farm starting out with excellent females and from going to shows, doing a lot of research and constantly educating ourselves we have made wise decisions in our purchases and breeding program and continue to grow.
In competing against many large farms WMA has won ribbons/championship in the show ring and in fleece classes which tells us our breeding program is on the right track. We are proud of our bloodlines, fiber fineness and our alpacas. It is challenging to show your alpaca or compete in fleece classes in front of a judge, as every judge has their preference. Remember, set your breeding goal program early. Our goal is to breed for fineness. When I skirt fiber of my own or for another farm to show in fleece competitions sometimes is hard to take an exceptional fleece off the table. We feel totally blessed that we are in a business that involves animals from thousands of years ago.
Jeff and I have also designed and manufacture at our farm the Cria*Bee*Upright pastern supports which are being used at the Ohio State University Veterinary Clinic. These supports help the premature cria that is down in their pasterns. In helping many farms across the United States with this dilemma we are very pleased that we have been able to help crias get up and start milking/playing quicker then they would have without these supports.
Alpaca farms small or large have an exciting opportunity to promote these amazing animals and their fiber. We are looking forward to many exciting years in the alpacas business.
